Factors That Determine Officiants Charges
Here are a few variables that influence how much couples will pay the officiant to be part of their big day.
Time of the Year
Some professionals might charge extra for the weddings they officiate during the peak season (May to September). During that time the demand is higher and if a professional is busy during the summer, she might charge more to officiate your marriage.
Are You Having a Religious or Civil Ceremony?
Generally, a religious ceremony is more expensive than a civil one especially if you are getting married in a church, synagogue or temple. Even more, if you really like St. Michael's church and you are not a regular member, you might be asked to become one.
Generally a house of worship requires donations and while there is not a set amount, the priests or rabbis can give you a clear idea how much it will cost you to say I DO in front a religious official.
Most civil officiants travel to your venue and be the one who will pronounce you husband and wife.
It is also important to note that churches often require pre-marital sessions and those cost extra.
One of the main drivers of the officiants variable costs are the distances between their location and your venue. If you are getting married at a venue outside the GTA, it might be wise from a cost standpoint to hire a local officiant in that area. For example, if you are tying the knot at your favorite winery in Niagara, find one of the vendors in Niagara or contact one of the larger companies that offer services in southern Ontario.
Sometimes, officiants bundle the travel into their package and you might not need to pay extra for travel.
Number of Guests
Recently, quite a few officiants base their rates on the number of guests present on your special day.
We don't necessarily endorse this method of setting the prices as for the vendor, it is irrelevant if they officiate a 20 person wedding or a 500 people one. However, a bride who plans a large wedding has a larger budget and basing prices on the number of guests makes sense only if one uses the "% of budget pricing method" suggested by many pricing blogs, planners and magazines.
We feel that using the % of budget pricing method is unfair for the couple who will end up paying unnecessary high fees for identical services only because the bride and groom want to invite more friends and family to their special day.
The Wedding Officiant is a Friend or Relative
If you are lucky enough to have a friend or relative who is an officiant, it is a matter of courtesy asking her to be the one who officiates your ceremony. While she might not charge you, it is a nice gesture offering a monetary gift or gift card to compensate for lost revenue, especially if you are getting married on a date when the demand is high. Most professionals make most of the money in the summer and couples should offer at least to cover the professional's expenses. Long weekends are such days and it is not uncommon for busy officiants to have several weddings booked on the same day.
Duration of Ceremony
The duration of ceremony impacts the officiant's cost twice. First, the longer the wedding ceremony the higher the effort of the professional. This is probably not the surprise of the century for you as we all know time is money, but it is good to keep that in mind.
Even more important, if you opt for a longer ceremony and you tie the knot outside the GTA, the officiant might miss out on the opportunity to book another wedding. If that is the case, it might not be such a bad idea to ask her to stay for the rest of the evening. That is very common, especially if you are having a religious ceremony.
Most officiants have several versions of a ceremony and for most of your guests your ceremony will be unique. However, if you truly want your ceremony to be one of a kind, you might want to ask your officiant for that and be ready to pay a premium.
Brand Name and Experience
Generally couples pay more for an experienced professional and new entrants in the wedding ceremony arena are known to offer lower packages and discounts. As usually, you get what you pay for and if money is not an issue, you might want to hire a known officiant so that you have a flawless wedding ceremony.
Often brand recognition, fame and the marketing skills go hand in hand. A larger company with a dedicated marketing professional posting every day on social media will command higher prices than a beginner with no website, no instagram account and no client/referral base.
